ESS is proud to offer the newly developed Gen.2 Vortech V3Si based VT1 supercharger system for the BMW N52 engine family. This supercharger system is designed to offer the customer a very quick and easy, 100% bolt-on installation. With this supercharger system we bump the power output by 80-100 horsepower! Some of the more noteworthy features of the supercharger are:

 

-Vortech V3 supercharger: This supercharger system incorporates the Vortech V3 self-lubricating supercharger unit running 6-6.5PSI boost. With a completely sealed supercharger system there is no concern of having to run additional oil lines to and from the engine. Also, the V3 supercharger is a much quieter unit than previous models.

-Larger Bosch fuel injectors with identical spray pattern and angle as OEM to ensure 100% perfect driveability with valvetronic reduced valve lift.

-Custom molded silicone discharge system.

-Custom molded plastic intake assembly with direct connection for PCV, ICV and MAF sensor.

-Billet CNC main SC bracket made from high grade aluminum and anodized to a perfect black finish that will look excellent for decades to come.

-CNC precision pulleys and beltdrive system.

 

Power development is 100% smooth and the car behaves just like stock until you demand power, then the car completely transform providing phenomenal acceleration.

The system maintains all OBD-II functions and it is backed by a comprehensive 2 year, unlimited mileage warranty program. The system installs in 4-6 hours using normal hand tools and no irreversible modifications to the car is necessary.

 

This system comes with an ESS E-Flash OBD2 cable. This allows the end user to upload the supercharger ECU software directly to the car from any PC running Windows XP or newer. The system also includes full diagnostic and code clearing capability. Any future ESS software updates can be received by email and loaded directly to the car. The stock ECU software will be saved and can easily be restored in the future.

*Currently not available for N51 engines.

*MSV70 cars that we convert to Alpha-N (MAFless) operation, will not retain ability to apply throttle and brake at the same time.

    I own a 2011 BMW 128i convertible. I have spent the last 3 years building out my car as a daily driver show car. I have upgraded not just cosmetics but also performance gear to push the N52 engine as far as I can, without blowing it up. This means not just adding performance gear, but quality tested gear I can trust. ESS Super Charger, BMW Performance Short shifter and MagnaFlow Cat Back Exhaust.



    I had a cold air in-take installed 2 years ago and while it added power and torque it just wasn’t enough “pull” to meet my needs. I wanted more.



    So I turned to the experts at Modbargains and ESS Tuning to gain the power I needed for my N52 engine.



    They recommended the ESS Vt1 Supercharger system (Gen 2) kit which adds about 80-100 whp and 45-90 Torque.

    Of course, I was apprehensive because this is a huge modification to my car and I loved the way it was running, I just wanted more power and torque. I didn’t want to lose the smooth ease of driving my car daily to gain more power, I wanted my cake and to eat it too! I wanted it to behave well in regular driving but be a beast when I pushed it.



    This kit delivers EXACTLY that! I am more than impressed.



    The kit arrived and was well packed, not an issue with anything in the kit, it was all there, larger injectors, brackets, pulleys, new belt, etc…. all high quality as promised.



    I gave the kit to my installer. He installed the supercharger kit in one day and calibrated it using the custom cable and app.



    When I took my car out for its initial test drive I was blown away with how it behaved. When just driving around it behaved identically to prior to having the SuperCharger installed. It idled correctly, came off the line nice and smooth, just like previously and was / is a joy to drive.



    THEN, I pushed it…. And wholly cow, it’s a BEAST! The torque curve and thus the shift point is much higher than it was previously, but only when I’m pushing it… It now wants to live in the 4000-6500 RPM range and is very happy there! When I come out of a corner and accelerate, the SuperCharger kicks in and the back end digs down and just pushes you in seconds from gear to gear. I just simply love how it behaves! Extreme predictable power.



    I have now been running my 128i for 4 months with this SuperCharger and the more I drive it, the more I love it. Boy does it get a LOT of attention at car shows as it’s rare to see a N52 SuperCharged and pushed to its limits like this. I had to bring it to BMW dealership for a recall (air bag) and when I popped the hood I had 6 Technicians gawking and taking photos and the service manager offered to buy it on the spot.



    I can’t say enough good stuff about the kit, the supercharger, the tune, and of course the people at ESS (And ModBargains too!)



    I now drive my dream car that pushes the limits because of these guys! Thanks!

    My ESS supercharger kit was delivered by a guy driving an E39. How cool is that?
    I was really looking forward to the weekend I selected to do the install. I read through the instructions several times, even though the instructions were not specific to my car. The many extra steps described in the instructions were not a problem; but there were issues with information missing from the documentation. (as follows)
    Gaining access: On the E85, I needed to remove the radiator cowling. Since I’ve got small forearms, I didn’t need to remove the radiator, but I also had to remove the intake manifold. I’ve done that so many times, it has become easy. I did not need to remove the fender liner as described in the instructions, but I had to pound a small indentation into the metal part of the fender liner with a rubber mallet to provide clearance. (After examining pictures on the ESS website, I see this was their solution too).
    Supercharger preparation: Usually, Vortech superchargers are mounted at 45 degrees. They come from the factory ready for a 45-degree mount, with the drain hose mounted at 4-o’clock. But ESS mounts the supercharger in a 0-degree straight up configuration, so the supercharger needed to be prepped for a straight up installation. I had to reposition the drainage hose to the 6-o’clock position.
    I needed to obtain a dipstick of proper length too. AJ from ESS FedEx’d the proper dipstick.
    The Idler pulley supplied for the serpentine belt was too large and clearance was poor. AJ from ESS FedEx’d a smaller pulley.
    There were no instructions for fuel injectors' R&R, but they went in easy. Just don’t mess with them and don’t try to reinstall the clips from the original injectors. The new ones are held in by gravity. Use some WD40 to get them to slide in nicely.
    The bolts that came with the kit are steel. I had to find copper based thread lock. It is not available from my local auto parts store, but I found some on Amzn.
    Wrong size PCV blankers came with the kit. Hans from ESS Fedex’d proper parts (thanks again, Hans).
    3.5" metal intake could be refined. It's fit is very close to other parts of the system. Both connections to the supercharger inlet and the air cleaner appear to be off-set. The Air cleaner rests on the silicone supercharger outlet hose and is very close to the shock tower. I ditched the 2” length of hose that came with the kit and ordered a 3” “hump-hose”. The hump in the middle of this special hose allows it to bend for slight offset, which made the fitting the plumbing parts much easier. I also got some heavy-duty belt clamps that are more secure and better looking than the supplied clamps.

    Although no bolt-on kit is ever as easy as it looks, here are the bullets that require refinement IMO:
    1. Update the instructions.
    2. If the 3.5" metal intake can be redesigned to allow for easier air filter R&R, make it long enough to mount the MAF on top. With the current design, it mounts on the bottom side of the pipe, where gravity may be the cause of future problems.
    3. 65 mm idler pulley.
    4. Pre-prep the supercharger for the 0-degree install.

    Flashing the ECU took only a few minutes. The car started right away. There were a few faults as expected. They did not return once they were cleared.

    I was provided 2 tunes to try. There is the standard tune; it makes the car feel like a roadster – sporty, and high revving. The second tune has optimized vanos/valvtronic/DISA settings. It makes the car feel more robust; stronger. I find myself driving around town in 5th gear (low revs) I used to drive around in 3rd or 4th. It's like I'm driving a 5-series. Not sure which of the two I prefer, but I’ll be having lots of fun over the next few months trying to decide.

    At first idle, everything sounded loose and more like a Mac truck than a roadster. 150 miles into the break-in and the noise almost gone, but a whine at 4000 rpm tells that the engine is not stock.

    With installation completed and supercharger broken-in, the Z4 is running like it did before; but with an extra hundred or so horses. It’s an extremely satisfying upgrade; very smooth. And when I'm in the spirit, I can make exhaust note can go from mellow to heavy metal, and the acceleration curve become a straight line.
